Still waiting for Winter...

It is hard to believe that it is January....it looks like summer, smells like fall, and we still haven't gotten any rain... Though it is hard to imagine that I would ever be watering the garden in January, the bright side of this is that we have more wonderful days spent exploring, hiking, building new garden beds, and group trips to the beach. We have had some new restructuring to "Farm Day" which has helped everyone to feel more in tune with the garden cycles and bed rotations. We have now established a "Garden Bible" so that everyone has access to our garden logs, journals, to-do-lists, rotation cycles and can document observations and progress together. We have had some wonderful new additions to the Farm this month- (that we managed to squeeze in-just barely:) Angus who is taking time off from film-making in New York, and claire who has a backround in biology and botany; both of whom have fit in wonderfully with everyone on the farm. My highlight of January is definitely the amazing variety of fresh breads and treats coming out of the kitchen. Matt 1 has been transformed! We all joke that when he arrived he could only boil an egg, and he is now an incredibly gifted baker-(even pulling off perfect focaccia and bagels!) Meghan is our cookie mama-and Jacob is our master-baker in residence. It was wonderful having Karoline's mother visit this month- she is supermom! She helped in the gardens, treated us to amazing soups, breads, authentic taboli, and the best truffles that I have ever eaten. Matt Pat, Dori and Alan have been doing an amazing job building the "dorms"- which are almost finished and ready to be moved into. Zack and Karoline have become such a vital part of the farm that I cannot imagine life here without them....and now that Sydney and Ulani are back from the mainland- we will see if he will truly become leap-frog champion of the world with a 7 person leap! January has been a month of shifting and refining for me. This month, more than ever, it is the simple small acts of kindness and gratitude that mean so much~ and remind us all of just how much we have to be thankful for.

  1. You're right she is SUPERMOM, and us "mainlanders" are glad to have her back...of course she does miss the garden and the 80 degree days with the soft air....and of course her daughter:)

Thanks so much for your hospitality and the wonderful time you showed my wife, Diane really enjoyed her time with all of you!

  2. Hi all of you at Hana Farms- and your fans,
I want to say that one of the best gifts I have ever received was the gift of time staying at the Farm. The creative people I met - "wwoofers", residents and locals- made the peace/joy/wonder of a stay in Hawaii even more intense. Sharing life with you all was such a pleasure. Thank you, you guys ROCK!
